Muharram (1447)

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Welcome to our newsletter, as we welcome the month of Muharram; the first month of the Islamic (hijri) calendar and the beginning of a new Islamic year. Muharram is also one of the four sacred months, where rewards of good deeds are multiplied. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called this month, “the sacred month of Allah ﷻ.”

“The best fasting after Ramadan is the Sacred Month of Allah (Muharram)…’ (Muslim) and the greatest day to fast in Muharram is the 10th. Fasting on the day of ’Ashura (10th of Muharram) ‘expiates the minor sins of the past year’ (Muslim).

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised us to also fast on the 9th and/or 11th of Muharram in order to differentiate between his Ummah and the People of the Book.

In a narration reported by Imam Ahmad, it was on this day (Ashura) that the Ark of Prophet Nuh alayhi salaam came to rest on Mount Judiyy’. [Tafsir Ibn Kathir] Prophet Musa alayhi salaam and the Children of Israel escaped from Egypt and the oppression of the Pharaoh and it was a day that Allah ﷻ tested his Prophets and blessed them, saved them, forgave them, and took them back to Him.

In Muharram we can’t forget the great sacrifices that occurred in this month either; that of the martydom of Sayyiduna al-Husayn alayhi salaam, his family and some of his companions, may Allah ﷻ be well pleased with them all. They stood up against oppression to protect the truth It was indeed a sad day but also a day of great victory for Sayyiduna al-Husayn alayhi salaam, because he remained true to his principles. It was a victory for truth over weapons and force. His steadfastness alayhi salaam should fill our hearts with joy, love and veneration for him and for all those who were martyred on that day. May they always inspire us to stand up for truth and to place our trust firmly in our Lord. Ameen.
