Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Welcome to our ninth newsletter, as we enter the month of Dhu’l Qa’dah; the 11th month of the Islamic (hijri) calendar and one of the four sacred months ordained by Allah ﷻ.
A SACRED MONTH
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah ﷻ is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah ﷻ [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them…” – Surah at-Tawbah 9:36
“In all (twelve) months, Allah ﷻ then chose four out of these months and made them sacred, emphasising their sanctity, making sinning in them greater, in addition to multiplying the rewards of righteous deeds during them.” – Tafseer Ibn Katheer
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SACRED MONTHS
The three main characteristics of the sacred months are:
1. They were singled out by Allah ﷻ as sacred and are thus indisputably special.
2. It is forbidden to start fighting during them.
3. Our deeds, good and bad, carry more weight during the sacred months.
IMPORTANT HISTORICAL EVENTS IN THIS MONTH
In the life of RasulAllah ﷺ, many Important historical events took place during the month of Dhu’l Q’adah some of these were; the Battle of Khandaq, the Truce of Hudaybiyah and the Pledge of Ridwan, and the Compensatory Umrah of RasulAllah ﷺ as well as the Farewell Pilgrimage where the Hajj and Umrah were combined and the Farewell Sermon was given. This event marked the end of the Prophet’s ﷺ life and is considered one of the most significant events in Islamic history.
This month also holds great significance in Islamic culture, particularly for those planning to make the pilgrimage to Makkah for Hajj. The name Dhu’l Qa’dah translates as “the one of truce” or “the one of calm”, as it is said that during this month, Arab tribes used to cease fighting and warfare in order to make their way to Makkah for the annual pilgrimage.
WAYS TO INCREASE IN GOOD DEEDS THIS MONTH
The rewards of righteous deeds are multiplied during this month so we are encouraged to increase in different acts of ibadah like fasting, seeking forgiveness, reading Qur’an and giving charity. Allah ﷻ has created for us a year divided into lunar months, many of which have special virtues and offer unique ways for us to draw closer to Him.
