Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Welcome to our nineteenth newsletter, as we rejoice in entering the month of Ramadan, in hope of receiving the best of guests. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah ﷻ has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.”‘ (Sunan an-Nasa’i).
THE GREATEST INTENTION IN RECEIVING RAMADAN
The greatest intention in receiving Ramadan is that we intend to perfect our following of the best person who ever experienced Ramadan, the one by whom Ramadan was ennobled ﷺ. There is no greater or more comprehensive intention than this. We should be keen to implement as much of his Sunnah as we are able. We should be conscious that we are emulating him in both obligatory and extra acts of worship and in customary actions. All types of good and all other intentions are combined in this intention.
(Advice from Habib Umar bin Hafiz hafidhahu Allah).
THE FIRST NIGHT OF RAMADAN
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “On the first night of the month of Ramadan, the devils are chained and the jinn are restrained, the gates of Hellfire are closed and none of its gates are opened, the gates of Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed, and a heavenly caller announces: O seeker of good, come near! O seeker of evil, stop short! Allah has those He saves from the Hellfire, and that is during every night.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī 682)
THE MONTH OF THE QUR’AN
Ramadan is not only a month of fasting and prayer but also a month of the Qur’an. It holds a special relationship with the Qur’an, as Allah (Most High) says: “Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the decisive authority.” [Qur’an, 2:185].
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked which deed was the best. He ﷺ replied: “The ever-traveling one.” When asked what the ever-traveling one was, he ﷺ said, “The companion of the Qur’an who travels from the beginning of the Qur’an to its end and from its end to its beginning, whenever he settles, he departs.” [Hakim, Tirmidhi, Darimi]
May Allah ﷻ help us to make the most of this noble month with fasting, prayer, and recitation of the Qur’an, for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Responsive. May Allah ﷻ send His Blessings and Salutations upon our Master Muhammad ﷺ and his family and companions. Ameen.
(Advice of Shaykh Dr. Muhammad Fayez Awwad hafidhahu Allah)
